For bodycare and household products, there are even bottles made from 100% recycled material.

When it comes to bottles made from 100% recyclate there's an old saying: Anything is possible. One example: Hamburger Wertstoff Innovative has developed the first detergent bottle made of 100 % Hamburg recyclate from the yellow bin. A second example: The shower gel bottles from Frosch Senses. They are made with 100% recycled HDPE and were the first made from this material to be used for cosmetics.

We have thoroughly tested two methods for using PCR in packaging, with a clear result. Our Managing Director Christian Müller states: "With the tests, we were able to show that it is possible to use recycled plastics for packaging sensitive products. With the right technology, there is no proven risk of migration from the recyclate to the filling material."

We even take it one step further: You can use PCR materials without optical losses or impairment of the filler material – quite simply in the daily production process! This is ensured by our screen changer, which keeps impurities from the recycled material away from the extrusion head. This means that a proportion of 60–70% recycled material is no longer a problem. So far, the quota only applies to non-refillable PET beverage bottles. From 2030, the quota will apply to all single-use plastic beverage bottles. Other types of packaging will follow.

The question of how high the recycled content of PET beverage bottles has to be, is no longer a matter of conjecture. The German government's website provides clear information: "From 2025, non-refillable PET beverage bottles must contain at least 25 percent of recycled plastic, i.e. so-called recyclate. From 2030, this quota will be increased by at least 30 percent for all beverage bottles made of single-use plastic."

Moreover, as is so often the case, this is a truism: the competition never sleeps, and so some have already set out to use 100% PCR for beverage bottles. One example is Lidl with its own brand "Saskia". Other examples come from Vöslauer and Römerquelle.

Consumers not only expect sustainable packaging, they are also willing to pay for it.

It is widely believed that environmental protection is a great thing when others care about it. Is that really the case? Simon-Kucher & Partners conducted a survey of consumers on the subject of sustainable product packaging. The fact that around three quarters of people stated that sustainable packaging is important to them is less surprising. But it is very surprising that 83% are prepared to spend more money on it. From their point of view, the price can go up by an average of 6.5%. Equally interesting is the fact that packaging is perceived as sustainable if it is biodegradable or consists of recycled and recyclable materials.

A survey conducted by Pro Carton in 2021 also came to similar conclusions: Here, two-thirds of people in Germany said they would pay more if they knew that a product's packaging had a less harmful impact on the environment.

What does this mean for everyone involved in packaging? Don't miss out on tomorrow's market today and leave the field to those who have already set out to use the topic of recyclate for themselves.

Indeed, all polyolefins are recyclable.

Good news! In order for polyolefin plastics to be recycled in an economically viable manner, a few requirements must be met. One of these is that the closure must be of the same type as the bottle body and accordingly form a combination of PP/PP or PE/PE. In addition, it must be a mono-material that is light in color. And - last but not least - the bottle must be drainable.

We can provide you with the necessary assistance to ensure that you can use PCR materials without optical loss or impairment of the filling material. Our technical center, which holds two blow molding machines, can be utilized for cases like these. In the center, you have the opportunity to test the processing of PCR without downtime in your own production and to design your own product. It's easy to see why we make this offer. Our colleague Varinia Lück, Head of the W. MÜLLER Technical Center, explains: "PCR materials are new territory for many processors. We have already gained experience with such materials from a variety of manufacturers since 2005. We test processability and performance, support migration tests and help with loss of mechanical properties, impurities or processing problems. "

That's the way it is with perceived truths: We often rely on information from the past and by doing so, might endanger our own economic future. In fact, the recycling rate of plastic packaging from the yellow bag is now over 60%. This is a good development – also because it exceeds the legal target of 58.5%. A look at the details is even more astounding: 74% of plastic packaging for household use is already made of recyclable plastic. In the case of PET beverage bottles subject to mandatory deposits, the figure is as high as 80 percent."

Indeed, acceptance of plastics is on the rise, and for good reasons.

Things should always be looked at in as many ways as possible. With this in mind, McKinsey recently set about examining the environmental benefits of plastic and its alternatives. The results were initially surprising: in 13 out of 14 cases, plastic came out on top with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

That's not surprising, since the often-praised alternatives include aluminum, for example. However, metal processing consumes considerably more energy, and more energy means more carbon dioxide emissions. It is often argued that aluminum can be recycled without any loss of quality. This is true in the laboratory. In everyday life, more than 400 different aluminum alloys are used with a wide variety of metals. If they are melted down together, the quality suffers. There are similar limitations with the other packaging materials. So, is everything fine now in terms of plastics? No, there is still work to be done, and the pressure from society and legislators will continue to increase for packaging that is ever more resource-efficient and uses less energy. This process has a very unspectacular name: ReCo3. But let's start from the beginning: The PCR materials on the market are often gray, blue or green – only some are light or natural colored, as desired. To compensate for the color variations, we embed a thicker PCR layer between two thin layers of pure material - done. This makes it possible to use gray, blue or green PCR materials and still produce packaging in the desired colors. What's more, the overall amount of masterbatch is also lower, resulting in cost savings. That should be enough, because we say: A product sample says more than a thousand words ...

There is, however, a need for optimized take-back and deposit systems to further increase bottle collection rates is evident.

Meeting new recycling quotas is not exclusively a task for the yellow bag. Above all, it's about discovering and trying out new ways. The drugstore chain dm, for example, is offering to return plastic bottles empty of residue as part of a test in selected stores. The aim is to directly recover high-quality recyclate for the packaging of its own brands. In this way, around 90% of non-food plastic product packaging is to consist of at least half recyclate by 2025.

In fact, especially with the Circular Economy Action Plan II, packaging is moving to the center of the circular economy. This means that radical changes are just around the corner that affect not only, but above all, packaging: a "circular design," global standards for product sustainability, or restrictions on single-use and over-packaging are just three examples. The requirement that all packaging must be reusable or recyclable from 2030 is particularly important. What do you need to do now? Unfortunately, we cannot tell you that here in a short way - there is no one solution, only the individual one. Yes, solutions are available and capacities are already being expanded.

Take Danone, for example: The new "So Delicious" bottle is made from around 80% sugar cane. First, ethanol is extracted from the sugar cane, which is then dried to produce ethylene. The ethylene is then processed into polyethylene, which is finally used to make the bottles. This method not only relies to a very large extent on a renewable raw material, but also significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions: during processing, the plants used only emit as much CO2 as they absorbed during their growth phase. They are therefore considered more environmentally friendly than petroleum-based plastics.

Braskem, a manufacturer of biopolymers based in the Netherlands, is the company responsible for this bottle. Together with Lummus Technology, Braskem is currently working on licensing the production of green ethylene worldwide. The goal is to produce about one million tons of bio-based polyethylene by 2030. Or to put it another way, this is no longer a niche market.
