Indeed, acceptance of plastics is on the rise, and for good reasons.
Things should always be looked at in as many ways as possible. With this in mind, McKinsey recently set about examining the environmental benefits of plastic and its alternatives. The results were initially surprising: in 13 out of 14 cases, plastic came out on top with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s not surprising, since the often-praised alternatives include aluminum, for example. However, metal processing consumes considerably more energy, and more energy means more carbon dioxide emissions. It is often argued that aluminum can be recycled without any loss of quality. This is true in the laboratory. In everyday life, more than 400 different aluminum alloys are used with a wide variety of metals. If they are melted down together, the quality suffers. There are similar limitations with the other packaging materials. So, is everything fine now in terms of plastics? No, there is still work to be done, and the pressure from society and legislators will continue to increase for packaging that is ever more resource-efficient and uses less energy.
